Key Word Signing is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tool designed to help pre-verbal or pre-speaking children communicate before they develop speech or for non-speaking children. It also supports those with unclear speech. By using a combination of spoken language and signed key words, Children’s Key Word Signing not only aids in communication but has also been shown to encourage verbal speech if possible.

Our signs are based on Auslan (Australian Sign Language), although Key Word Signing is not Auslan. It uses a simplified set of signs to focus on core words, which helps to bridge communication for children with various needs. This approach makes it a fantastic tool for neurodivergent children, including those with autism, dyspraxia, apraxia, Down syndrome, and ADHD.

This poster is perfect for use at home, in early learning settings, Speech Pathologists’ and Occupational Therapists’ clinics, special schools, and other environments where children are present. We recommend that all communication partners, including peers, have access to Key Word Signing resources.

Our poster is designed, printed, and packaged in Australia, ensuring high-quality and locally sourced materials.
