The book also contains a QR code that takes you to a video tutorial of the book being read and signed with all the key word signs.

 

Children’s books are a great way to include key word sign into your day and encourages you to use sign while reading the text, to expose your child to more sign and aiding their comprehension of the word.

 

Recent research (published December 2022) found that:

 

“during shared book reading between parents and young children with Down syndrome, positively affects the communicative interaction that occurs between parents and their children. Children signed more and became more active participants and through repetition, parents increased the dosage of word/sign pairings. Each of these factors have been shown to facilitate growth in children’s language abilities”

Key Word Sign is an alternative and augmentative communication tool that uses Auslan (Australian Sign Language) alongside speech to encourage pre-speaking or non-speaking children an alternative way to communicate while encouraging speech through the communication partners verbalising of the words while signing.
