Children’s Key Word Signing Poster: A Valuable AAC Tool for Classrooms and Therapy Centres

This Children’s Key Word Signing poster has been expertly designed to support communication in classrooms, Occupational Therapy centres, Speech Pathology centres, and other environments where children are present. Created in collaboration with All About Autism on the Sunshine Coast, it’s a highly effective communication tool for children facing various communication challenges, including those who are non-verbal, have communication delays, or experience difficulties with traditional spoken communication.

With input from specialists who work closely with neurodivergent children (not ABA-based), the poster features signs that are particularly useful for a classroom setting and beyond.

Children’s Key Word Signing is an unaided AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) tool. It’s a proven method for enhancing communication between children with communication challenges—such as those with autism, dyspraxia, Down syndrome, communication delays, or anxiety—and their communication partners. CKWS empowers children with a visual and physical way to express themselves, helping bridge the gap to spoken language.

The poster includes 24 essential key word signs:

yes, no, good, bad, calm, breathe, quiet, sit, play, turn, again, share, kind, help, friend, sorry, wait, stop, more, finished, say, think, toilet, and name.

Children’s Key Word Signing uses simplified sentences that combine both signs and speech, encouraging the development of spoken language while providing children with an alternative method of communication. Research has shown that CKWS promotes verbal speech by supporting children’s ability to express themselves through signs, making it a valuable resource in speech therapy and educational settings.

While CKWS uses signs borrowed from Auslan (Australian Sign Language), it is not Auslan. Auslan has its own unique grammar, structure, and connection to the Deaf Community, which CKWS does not incorporate.

We also offer custom posters tailored to specific needs, with prices varying depending on your request. Please contact us via our shop for more information.

This product is 100% Australian-made, making it a high-quality resource for teachers, therapists, and families looking to enhance communication and support language development in children.
