What’s included

Training

The Children’s KWS training is undertaken over three hours. This is can be either in person or live online (via Zoom) and online training can either be one 3 hour or two x 1.5 hour sessions.   Due to the session being highly interactive we recommend in-person training but can do live online if that suits the service better.

On completion of the training all participants receive a Children’s Key Word Sign certificate. Please note for online participants the Educator must have attended BOTH sessions to receive a certificate.

We encourage all services to incorporate the Progression Pack. This collection of resources is designed for Early Learning Services to aid in ongoing adoption, continuation, and expansion of key word sign. It includes posters, flashcards, song & sign booklets, and story sign books covering core words, colours, feelings, safety signs, and playroom signs.

Parents

This training has been designed to encourage the parents and carers to implement Key Word Sign at their home with the assistance of your educators.

It is recommended that your Educators have undertaken both the Introduction and Recap and Expansion before completing this training. This is to ensure they are confident in assisting your parents with the practical’s they will be leading during training.

This training is designed for services who have completed the Introduction to Children’s Key Word Sign training but would benefit with some more support and refresh of the content.

During the 1 hour session, via Zoom, we provide an overarching recap of the original training, including what is Children’s KWS, how to sign and why signing is beneficial to your service. The training also recaps all the signs covered in the initial training.

An essential part of this training any barriers the service is facing that is holding them back in successfully implementing KWS.

This training is available to services that have completed the Introduction to Children’s Key Word Sign and provides a more in-depth look at Key Word Sign and more hands-on practice for your Educators.

It is only available to Educators that have completed the initial training and have started to implement KWS sign within their service.

Training

The Children’s KWS Recap and Expansion training is undertaken over three hours. This is completed either in person (in one session), or over two online sessions (on zoom) with each training lasting approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

Physical Key Word Sign Resources

This training offers 15 Communication Boards (physical and digital copies) designed for play and emotional well-being. Each board features symbols on one side and Key Word Signs on the other. Additionally, every board includes a QR code linking to video tutorials demonstrating all the signs featured. Topics covered include:

They include a mixture of core and fringe words, as well as themed weeks including Christmas, Halloween, Valentines’ Day and Mother’s Day.

Each card includes a QR code that takes you to video tutorials for the sign of the week.

Also include is instructions on what Key Word Sign is, when we recommend the signs are used and downloadable Communication Action Plans to encourage your Educator’s to consider when they will implement the signs during the week.

Included in your physical resources is our Farm Themed Pack, designed to captivate young learners. This ensures that you engage children in Key Word Sign by incorporating fun signs that pique their interest. This pack features:

What’s included

Training

The KWS and mathematics training is undertaken over one hours via zoom (can be in person on request).

During the Key Word Sign and mathematic training the following topics are covered:

• Recap of Children’s Key Word Sign and it’s characteristics.
• Overview of mathematics and gesture research.
• Progression of spacial mathematical concepts by children.
• Importance of spacial and positional concepts.

This Children’s Key Word Sign training is designed for Schools, both mainstream and Special Schools. For mainstream schools we highly recommend Prep and Year 1 teachers and other staff participate.

This resource contains 16 Key Word Sign relating to equipment commonly found in the classroom including pen, book, iPad, scissors, glue, pencil case.

School Key Word Sign Core Vocabulary Book

This resource contains over 180 Key Word Signs that are useful and frequently used with a school environment. It is inspired by Frizzle et al (2023) school core vocabulary (we have no association with the research only inspired by).
