This Children’s Key Word Sign training is designed for Schools, both mainstream and Special Schools. For mainstream schools we highly recommend Prep and Year 1 teachers and inclusion support staff participate.

Your CKWS Foundation

One in four children starts school developmentally behind in communication (Speech Pathology Australia, 2025).Children’s Key Word Sign (CKWS) gives school staff a practical way to make spoken language more visual and accessible, while giving students another way to understand, express themselves and take part.

Key Word Sign is a communication tool that uses signs from Auslan alongside spoken English, with signs added to the key words in a sentence. It can support students who find spoken communication or understanding language difficult, while helping schools create a more inclusive communication environment for everyone.

Our CKWS training is practical, engaging and designed for real school environments. We don’t just teach signs. We help staff understand the what, why and how of CKWS, then show them how to use it naturally throughout classroom learning, transitions, routines and everyday interactions.

Schools begin in different places. Some are just starting, while others are building confidence, supporting new staff or wanting to get everyone signing consistently. Wherever your school is starting from, we’ll help your team build the confidence and practical skills to make signing part of everyday school life.
