“Key Word Sign” is a more formal communication approach commonly used with children of all ages, particularly children with communication difficulties, developmental delays or disabilities, although it can benefit all children. In Key Word Sign, only the important “key words” in a sentence are signed while the full sentence is still spoken. For example, “Do you want more drink?” may only sign WANT, MORE and DRINK. Key Word Sign uses signs borrowed from Auslan, but it is not Auslan itself because it follows spoken English word order and is designed to support spoken language.
