How to Sign
Dominant and Non Dominant Hands
When signing, we lead with our dominant hand (the hand you naturally write with). One handed signs are with our dominant hand.
If you’re holding something in your dominant hand and need to sign quickly—especially in urgent situations like giving a safety instruction—it’s fine to use your non-dominant hand. In Auslan it is important to always use your correct hand, however with KWS the importance is on using communication over accuracy.

Some signs require both hands. In these cases, there are two types:
- Symmetrical signs, where both hands move together (e.g. “how” – pictured).
- Asymmetrical signs, where your dominant hand moves while your non-dominant hand stays still.
An easy way to remember this:
Your dominant hand is like the pen, and your non-dominant hand is the paper.
The pen does the writing (movement), while the paper stays steady.
Following this principle helps ensure your signing remains clear and consistent—for both you and your child.
